Multicultural Education In The Islamic Perspective

Abstract

Multicultural education has become one of the important educational approaches in building a harmonious society amidst social, cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity. In the context of Indonesia as a pluralistic country, multicultural education is not only understood as a process of transferring knowledge about diversity, but also as an effort to build social awareness, tolerance, and respect for differences. This study aims to examine the concept of multicultural education from an Islamic perspective by emphasizing the values of ta‘aruf, tasamuh, and justice contained in the Qur’an and Hadith. This research uses a library research method with a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were obtained from various literature sources such as scientific journals, books, academic articles, and previous studies related to Islamic multicultural education. The results of the study show that Islam views diversity as sunnatullah that must be accepted with openness and wisdom. Islamic values teach the importance of living peacefully side by side, respecting the rights of others, and building fair social relationships without discrimination. The example of Prophet Muhammad SAW through the Medina Charter also serves as a concrete example of implementing a harmonious multicultural society. Islamic-based multicultural education has a strategic role in shaping students who are inclusive, humane, tolerant, and able to interact positively within a pluralistic society.
